"AuroraWatch UK" is an app that allows you to monitor geomagnetic activity and receive alerts when the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, may be visible in the UK. The app provides information on increases in geomagnetic activity and the current alert status, as well as a 30-minute forecast model from SWPC and the last 24 hours' recent history. However, the app does not alert historically and may be affected by phone settings such as Battery Saver. There is also a necessary delay before alerts are sent, as recommended by Lancaster University. The app is developed and maintained by Tinybouldering Projects and uses data from the SAMNET and/or AuroraWatchNet magnetometer networks provided by Lancaster University. The alerts tend to default to Lancaster magnetometer for alerting, but there is a greater chance of seeing the aurora in Shetland.
