Nastaʿlīq is a calligraphic hand used for Persian script and is the predominant style in Persian calligraphy. It originated in Iran in the 14th and 15th centuries and is commonly used for written poetry and as a form of art in Iran, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and other countries. A simplified version of Nastaʿlīq is used for writing in Kashmiri, Punjabi, and Urdu. It is written using a piece of trimmed reed called a qalam and carbon ink named davat. Two important forms of Nastaʿlīq panels are Chalipa and Siah-Mashq. Chalipa consists of four diagonal hemistiches of poetry while Siah-Mashq communicates via composition and form. Nastaʿlīq is among the most fluid calligraphy styles for the Arabic alphabet, with short verticals, no serifs, and long horizontal strokes. It is equally important in the areas under its cultural influence, including Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Turkic Uyghur language of the Chinese province of Xinjiang. Ottoman calligraphers also developed Diwani and Ruqah styles from it.
